BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE

Butterflies are free. A story. A love story. A story about how love transcends any physical obstacle. A story about ambition, dreams, and disappointment. A story about Don, who wants to truly live. A story about Jill, who teaches him how to do it. A story about Ms. Baker and a mother's fear of letting go of her 'baby bird' who is trying to learn how to fly free, afraid he might break his wings. A story about two  young people who find each other, then lose each other, so that in the end… A story with beams of joy and tearful eyes…

REVIEWS

… Alex Călin has the necessary ease and intelligence that correctly lead him to an interpretation  void of realist accents regarding the illustration of the handicap. For a good portion of the play he doesn't even hint at his defect so that the surprise is so much greater when we find out Don can't see, and his self-irony is encouraging. The actor performs, his role recommending him for others in plays with contemporary people, for the authenticity of his performance.  Ioana Anastasia Anton is glamorous as usual, playing Jill cu playful naturalness, avoiding vulgarity that does not mix here with a dull approach.  Catrinel Dumitrescu, who might once have a perfect actress for Jill, plays the modern mother, in an impeccable silhouette, counting on a certain hierarchy in her relationship with her son that she suggests through wise pauses and a generally discrete presence. Her act is elegant and exudes the charm the actress has always had.  Actor Şerban Gomoi, increasingly cast on Bucharest stages, where he is making a name for himself, appears  in an episodic role well anchored by a few lines.

… Right from the beginning I appreciated the fact that the roles of the two young characters, Don and Jill, were entrusted, with a positive outcome,  to actor Alex Călin, proficient in the methods of expression invested in his difficult and remarkable interpretative  role, and to Ioana Anastasia Anton, respectively, a bright example of a new talent wave, endowed with perhaps not only the obsession, but also with the vocation of performance. The lines are well paced and nuanced - tensioned, ironic, or deliciously humorous - out of these Catrinel Dumitrescu (Ms Baker), the well-known actress of Nottara Theatre, accompanied by the short but colorful presence of Şerban Gomoi, as Ralph, the theatre director quick to grab Jill from the young woman's dull tower, where she was living her seemingly futureless life, and to take her to a life far from anonimity…

At Excelsior Theatre, in the 2016-2017 season, director Erwin Șimșensohn approaches the txt, exploring it in its smallest details, and puts together the performance using moods and fine strokes of emotion. As a sort of signature of his (…) the success of the play stands in the bet between Șimșensohn and the actors. Alex Călin and Ioana Anastasia Anton become his muses in shaping the story filled with gentleness and dreams.

… The ending gives us a tense suspense, with surprising transformations of attitude and reaction, slightly tailed by melodrama, until a happy end wanted by many in the audience will leave the two main characters blessed through the success and joy of the shared love, and the unhappy Ms Baker with the possibility of a late but not futile understanding of Don's purpose and reason  to search for his own happiness. (…) Erwin Şimşensohn manages to convince us of his professional credo and his own obsession regarding working with actors, crowned here by a success that the actors, along with the actress playing young Jill, treasure oftentimes as the acme of performance arts.

… It is one of the most beautiful, luminous, well played, credible, and emotional performances I have seen for quite a while now (…). A beautiful performance makes you think, gives you joy (not simply superficial glee), and offers you a certain "something" that you carry with you on the inside, like a precious gift, for a long time.

"Butterflies are free" is a performance where one laughs wisely, and meditates copiously, with one's mind's eye.   It is at the same time a play of puns and heavy word, or play and gravitas. It is a play about the fruitful expansion of the senses and about their "functional" atrophy, about the other's happiness as personal choice, about abnegation as life project. "Give a woman the chance to serve, and she will" is, in context, an applicable quip.

… "Butterflies are free" is abeautiful performance. And not just aesthetically. It is a play that allows you to take break from running. And think whether it is unnecessary to keep on running. Maybe after you shouted your freedom for all to hear, it is time to close your eyes and claim your freedom from the darkness of your closed eyelids. And then you can fly.
